The forest stretches over the slopes of the Pichincha volcano, at altitudes from 4,700m to 1,400m (15,500 to 4,600 ft) and covers diverse ecosystems ranging from the clouded, treeless plateau or "páramo" through subtropical forest to the Amazon tropical rain forest.
